How to Make a Chip Butty
The chip butty is a classic British sandwich which originated in the North West of England. It’s thought that the word “butty” was used as a colloquial term for bread and butter in that part of the world.
Whatever the origin is, I do know they taste delicious, so I’m going to share with you today how to make a chip butty sandwich, an authentic part of British culture.
Making this Classic British Sandwich
All you need to make this sandwich are 4 basic ingredients. Thick white sliced bread, some cooked chips, lots of butter and plenty of tomato ketchup. That’s all there is to it.
I’ve used frozen chunky oven chips for my sandwich but you can use French fries if you don’t have any to hand.
If you have the time, making your own chips adds to the authenticity of this classic recipe.
King Edward or Maris Piper potatoes are great for frying in hot oil. Cut the potato into long thick lengths and fry until golden brown.
Start off by cooking your chips. While they’re cooking take 2 thick slices of white bread and spread plenty of butter onto one side of each. I prefer butter but you can use margarine if you wish.
Place the cooked chips onto the buttered side of the bread and squirt a generous amount of tomato ketchup over the chips.
Some of you may want to add mayonnaise instead or even mustard, it’s up to you how you like your flavors.
The butter melts into the thick bread slices from the heat of the fresh cooked chips which really adds to the flavor.
Best you have a napkin to hand as it can get messy with all the ketchup and butter oozing out the bread.
There you have it. A good old British classic sandwich.
The butty may not be the most healthy of sandwiches but it sure does taste delicious. Enjoy!
