Homemade Tuna Salad Sandwich Recipe

This is a homemade tuna salad sandwich recipe with a little Italian twist added to the flavors.

Laura’s father used to own a pizza shop and this recipe was inspired by some of the traditional Italian flavors found in classic pizzas.

With the red onion, celery and Italian seasoning you can taste the mediterranean influence in each bite.

How to Make Tuna Salad Sandwich

The prep time for this sandwich is around 5 minutes, so you’ll soon be tucking into the final serving in no time.

You will need canned tuna in water to make the sandwich.

Start by chopping the celery very finely and leave to one side. I cut my celery on a wooden chopping board.

Take one celery stick and cut long ways down the middle. Then finely chop the 2 halves. You will need around half a cup full to make this sandwich.

Red onion

I love red onion in my tuna salad sandwich, but you can leave the onion out if you wish. Finely chop a quarter of the onion.

Mix the mayo

Mix the mayo, mustard and garlic together in a separate small bowl.

Add the tuna, celery, onion and mayo / mustard to a mixing bowl. I also add a splash of red wine vinegar and a dollop of Dijon mustard for extra tang.

Fold the ingredients together using a spatula for up to several minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper and a pinch of Italian seasoning.

Spread a generous amount of the tuna mix onto a single side of the sliced bread.

Top with juicy tomato slices and crunchy lettuce, plus the remaining slice of bread.

Your now ready to cut the sandwich into triangles and serve on a plate.

Ingredients

  • Whole grain bread
  • Canned white tuna in water
  • Mayonnaise
  • Dijon mustard
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Grated garlic
  • Italian seasoning
  • Red onion
  • Celery
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • Red wine vinegar

Instructions

  1. Drain water from canned tuna.
  2. Place tuna in mixing bowl.
  3. Finely chop celery.
  4. Finely chop red onion.
  5. Cut tomato into 4 slices.
  6. Mix mayo, grated garlic & mustard togother in small bowl.
  7. Add all ingredients to tuna in bowl.
  8. Mix all ingredients togther.
  9. Season to taste.
  10. Spread tuna mix onto bread – one side.
  11. Add tomato slices.
  12. Layer lettuce on top.
  13. Layer 2nd bread slice on top.
  14. Serve.
