Best Tomatoes For Sandwiches - Delicious, Tangy & Sweet Varieties
Almost everyone enjoys tomatoes, and for most people, it’s usually on a sandwich or possibly a burger. Here are some of the best tomatoes for a tasty sandwich.
There are tomatoes for every type of sandwich, from those that are suitable for a cheese and tomato combo to the perfect ones for slicing onto crispy cooked bacon.
Lets take a look at some of my favourate tomatoes to eat with various sandwich fillings.
Brandywine Tomato
Every gardener should have at least one variety of large tomato to chop onto sandwiches to fan out on the deli trays. The ‘Brandywine’ is unquestionably one of the best for a BLT sandwich.
It’s an heirloom gourmet beefsteak-kind slicer tomato of incredible flavor that sets the standard for other heirlooms.
An original pink beefsteak variety can weigh as much as 12 pounds for every fruit. The tomato has a strong flavor to complement and a distinct, melt-in-your-mouth suppleness to your flesh. Also, it comes in yellow, black, and red varieties, but the original variety is the most popular.
Big Boy Tomato
It’s a well-known hybrid giant globe-kind slicer tomato with easy-to-grow and rich flavor plants.
The Big Boy Tomatoes have an adequately balanced flavor and a solid texture that complements sandwiches well, especially cheese sandwiches. These tomatoes are pretty big, as the name suggests, and a few slices might be enough to cover the piece of bread.
Mortgage Lifter
It is yet another prevalent heirloom tomato best for making sandwiches. Mortgage Lifter is a pinkish, large fruit that weighs up to 1 pound. It is named after a developer who would use his profits from tomato sales to pay his mortgage.
The Mortgage lifter is another beefsteak type tomato that goes well with meats and cheeses. I particularly like to use this variety in a chicken club sandwich.
The tomato has few seeds and is ideally sliced finely with a mandoline slicer if you have one in your kitchen.
Cherokee Purple
Here is an ideal place to begin if you have never attempted a purple or black tomato. It’s a beefsteak in style that has a dark red color that smoothly turns purplish-green at its shoulders.
It’s an heirloom tomato with a fresh, sweet tomato taste that is said to hail from Cherokee Indians. It happily grows in the South, which is an incredible accompaniment to sandwiches with mayo.
They are delicious and full-flavored and are a perfect variety to begin with if you fancy moving away from the classic red style tomato. The green hue remains when the fruit is fully ripe adding a sense of occasion to a sandwich platter.
Early Girl Tomato
It’s a great tomato for slicing, a short-season tomato recognized for its consistent yield and early ripening.
While the type isn’t full-bodied with an abundance of heirloom beefsteak-kind fruit, it has an enticing homegrown flavor with the first medium-sized fruits to mature in your garden.
Early Girl tomatoes are superb in sandwiches and bagels along with cream cheese. Why not try some Icelandic smoked salmon with these juicy and succulent varieties.
Black Krim
Black Krim is another heirloom type tomato, a medium-sized and dark red beefsteak made of a smokey, rich, and slightly salty flavor.
It’s a delectable heirloom tomato that has rapidly become a personal favorite among tomato enthusiasts.
It’s yet another heirloom slicing tomato which is slightly smaller than the several others. It is believed to originate from the Crimean peninsula in the Black Sea hence the name.
Maglia Rosa
You often lookout for a snacking and sweet salad tomato such as Maglia Rosa all the time. Maglia Rosa, a long-leafed, wispy plant, produces these delicious, pretty pointy tomatoes.
I particularly enjoy these along with cucumber and lettuce or even rocket leaves as the sweetness balances with peppery green leaves.
Final Thoughts
The best tomatoes for slicing are generally those big, meaty tomatoes that are perfect for adding to sandwiches, subs, or just sliced up on a plate and enjoyed by themselves.
Not all slicing tomatoes need to be heirlooms. Some hybrids lend themselves deliciously as sandwich tomatoes.
There are so many types and varieties of tomato to choose from, especially when it comes to sandwiches.
My view is to try as many as you can with different sandwich fillings and just experiment with the flavors to see which ones you like the most.
